Students learn from local veterans

In a truly inspiring display of gratitude and patriotism, Mrs. Wiechman's Social Studies classes were privileged and honored to host two incredible local veterans in observance of Veterans Day. The day was transformed into a powerful learning experience, bringing history and service to vivid life for the students.

The honored guests were:

  • Craig Smith: Who dedicated 24 distinguished years as a Naval pilot, sharing insights into the life and duties of a service member in the air.
  • Dave Funston: A retired member of the Army Reserve, providing a valuable perspective on the dedication and commitment required of those who serve on the ground.

These esteemed gentlemen didn't just speak; they opened a window into their lives of service. They shared fascinating stories, compelling anecdotes, and a treasure trove of personal photos from their time in the military, capturing the sacrifices and triumphs of their careers. To make the experience even more memorable, Mr. Smith and Mr. Funston generously provided USA-themed bracelets and pins for students to proudly add to their lanyards, a tangible memento of the veterans' visit.

What an unforgettable and inspiring day it was for our students! It was a moving opportunity to personally thank these brave individuals and to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the selfless service and dedication of all our nation's veterans. The entire Maize South Intermediate School community extends its sincere thanks to Mr. Smith and Mr. Funston for sharing their wisdom, time, and spirit with the next generation.
